Five books were created & published during 2011 & 2012 by MBI under the general title: Hyaluronan: From Basic Science to Clinical Applications. General Editor, Endre A. Balazs. Editors: Istvan Hargittai & Magdolna Hargittai.

Volumes 1 & 3: These 2 volumes contain conversations with internationally well-known scientists who have spent most of their research activities on hyaluronan and on the structure and function of the substance between the cells of the vertebrate body – also called the biomatrix.

Volume 2: History of Hyaluronan Science describes the research work of a collection of former scientists who were interested primarily in the structure and biological function of hyaluronan. It also contains a chapter with the title: The Early History of Hyaluronan Research which reviews how hyaluronan was discovered, defined and its biological function analyzed in various tissues during the early days of biomedical uses.

Volume 4: Tivadar Huzella: Scientist and Humanitarian contains lectures in the memory of Huzella's exceptional research work on the importance of the structure and function of the substance that fills the space between the cells of the vertebrate body. The chapters in this book were written by his former students or admirers who knew him personally or read his books. The meeting in the memory of his scientific contributions and his unique humanitarian concepts was held in the auditorium of his former Department of Histology and Embryology of the Medical School of the Peter Pazmany University of Budapest, where he worked between 1932 and 1946.

Volume 5: Structure and Function of Biomatrix – Control of Cell Behavior and Gene Expression. In July 2011, an international meeting was organized in Budapest (Hungary) at the Semmelweis University Medical School in the same auditorium location immediately after the Tivadar Huzella memorial meeting was held. The lecturers at the conference were invited from USA, France, Great Britain, Hungary, Switzerland and Canada because of their biomedical research interests and years of work on the structure and function of the biomatrix – the complicated and highly specific space between the cells of all tissues and organs of the vertebrate body.

The use of hyaluronan as a therapeutic agent was first suggested in 1941 by Endre A. Balazs. The idea was based on experiments on wound healing and on the regeneration of synovial fluid after traumatic injuries. In 1958, Balazs suggested that extremely viscous hyaluronan solutions could be used to replace the vitreus after retinal surgery. This book reviews the suggested therapeutic uses of highly purified, viscoelastic hyaluronan solutions, both in eye surgery and in the treatment of intra-articular damage caused by arthritis.
The first 147 pages of this book describe in detail the experimental work carried out in Balazs’ laboratory on the effect of the highly purified, viscoelastic hyaluronan in intravitreal, intraperitoneal and intra-articular applications in animals. Human clinical trials on intravitreal, intradermal, intra-articular application, as well as the veterinary trials after joint injury, are also reported. The effect of hyaluronan on cell activities in healing wounds, on extravascular immunoreactions and on cell assemblies is also reported.
The appendix of the book contains 13 publications (in full length) produced between 1968 and 1971 on the therapeutic use of hyaluronan produced by Balazs’ company, Biotrics, Inc. (Massachusetts, USA) and used by clinical clinicians and scientists in the USA , France, Germany, Switzerland and Sweden.
This book was written to be used as a tool to identify a pharmaceutical company to manufacture and sell purified hyaluronan for use in the eye and the joint.

The joint and the eye share a very significant structural and biochemical feature: both contain a central liquid compartment surrounded by, and in direct contact with, solid matrices of connective tissue. No cellular or membranous barrier exists. In both of these structures, the main component of the liquid compartment is hyaluronan.
Because of developments making a wide range of hyaluronans available for therapeutic use, it was important to know how the hyaluronan content of the joint and eye changed during various artificially-created inflammatory conditions, and how an excess amount of hyaluronan applied to these tissue compartments was metabolized. Another area of investigation was how hyaluronan influences cellular adhesion and other functions of cells, especially those of the lymphomyeloid system.
This book summarizes the research by the author in the early 1980s, and reviews the associated literature on these subjects.
